As a singer, I’ve always admired other great vocalists such as Christina Aguilera and Jessie J to name a few. You’ll find several of their covers on my YouTube channel. Having said that, you can imagine my surprise when I received an invite from the OC Hit Factory to spend a weekend writing with the amazing Shelly Peiken! (co-writer of What a Girl Wants and Come on Over Baby/Christina Aguilera, Who You Are/Jessie J, Almost doesn’t count/Brandy, Mandy Moore, Glee, etc).
And the icing on the cake was that accomplished music publisher Suzan Koc would also be critiquing the music we created that weekend. Of course I accepted the invite instantly and thus began an amazing two weekends of writing, learning, singing, performing and working with industry veterans.
The end of the the writing camp culminated in a red carpet event where we performed our songs in front of a panel of industry professionals (which included the Lumineers manager!). The winning song went on to be fully produced and played on the radio. Although my group didn’t win the over all prize, we did receive an honorable mention which was pretty sweet ;) All in all, it was a weekend I will never forget.
I advise any aspiring songwriters to follow Shelly’s Blog. She’s hilarious and very forthcoming with songwriting advice.
