A Season That Didn’t Feel Like Me

A few years ago, I experienced something that completely shook my sense of self.

I’ve always been a high energy, optimistic type of person. The kind who wakes up with excitement, big dreams, and moves through life with purpose. Sitting still is something I’m trying to work into my life more.

So when I suddenly couldn’t find the motivation to get out of bed, I knew something was very wrong.

This wasn’t your average fatigue or burnout. I’ve danced with those before and have gotten pretty good at catching myself before I spiral into those up-and-down cycles. (I take my bath time and Netflix binges very seriously :p)

This felt different. It felt like a heaviness I had never known before. My thoughts were darker. My hope felt distant.

And for the first time in my life, I remember thinking…

Oh my gosh… am I depressed?

It just so happened that during this exact season, I was scheduled for a large blood panel for something completely unrelated. When the results came back, they ended up explaining far more than I expected.

When Mood Isn’t Just “In Your Head”

After running blood work, the answer became clear. My body was severely depleted.

I was low in iron, vitamin D & B and my cortisol was elevated. My system was simply not resourced enough to support the vibrant life I was trying to live.

Once I began supplementing based on my lab results and adjusted my nutrition and daily habits to match, everything shifted.

  • My energy returned.
  • My optimism came back online.
  • My creativity flowed again.

In fact, I felt better than ever before!

That experience taught me something I now share often: before assuming something’s wrong with your mindset, take a moment to check what might be happening inside your body. Sometimes the support you need is biological.

The Brain Chemistry Connection

The Serotonin and Dopamine Conversation

We hear constantly about serotonin and dopamine. They are often called the “happiness” and “motivation” neurotransmitters, but they do far more than influence mood.

Serotonin helps regulate:

• emotional stability
• sleep
• digestion
• how safe we feel in the world

Dopamine plays a major role in:

• drive
• pleasure
• focus
• reward

It’s the spark behind pursuing goals and feeling satisfaction when we move toward them. When these systems are supported, life feels expansive. When they are not, even simple tasks can feel overwhelming.

Nutrient deficiencies, chronic stress, inflammation, and hormonal imbalances can all influence these pathways.

Which means sometimes the most compassionate thing you can do for your mental health is gather real data about your body.

Why I Decided to Try Superpower

It’s been about a year since my last panel, so getting another one done has been on my mind. Perfect timing because the other day I open my email and see a lovely message from a company called Superpower inviting me to try their platform.

Superpower, an all in one personal health platform designed to give you a comprehensive look at what is happening beneath the surface through a baseline diagnostic panel that evaluates more than 100 biomarkers, including serotonin and dopamine related markers, vitamin levels, cholesterol indicators like LDL and ApoB, cortisol, and more.

Given my past experience, the decision was an easy —-> YES PLEASE.

I’ve already booked my blood draw and will continue updating this article as I move through the process, but I wanted to share my initial impressions because they genuinely stood out.

A seamless experience

First, the booking experience was incredibly smooth. The app was intuitive, simple to navigate, and refreshingly efficient.

Even better, they offered an in-home blood draw option, which I love!

• No rearranging your day
• No sitting in a waiting room
• No going out of your way to get important health information

A technician comes directly to YOU.

As I explored the platform, I was also impressed by how many services they offer beyond the baseline test. It’s clearly designed for people who want to be proactive about their health rather than reactive.

And if my past taught me anything, it’s that proactive care that can change EVERYTHING.

Listen to What Your Body Is Telling You

We often try to push through exhaustion. Override brain fog. Ignore emotional dips. But what if your body is simply asking for support?

When your biology is supported, your goals become easier to tackle.

Looking back, I am incredibly grateful I did not accept that low chapter as my new normal. Getting my labs was not just informative. It was empowering.

It reminded me that our bodies are always communicating with us. Sometimes we just need the right tools to listen.

I am excited to see what insights this new round of testing brings and will share my results and experience once they come in.

If you have ever wondered whether your energy, mood, or motivation might have a physiological component, this could be a powerful place to start.
